How to Clean & Disinfect Poly CCX Phones

Cleanliness has always been important — now it is necessary. We don’t need to tell you that.

At the same time, in our smartphone world we all use touchscreen displays. Users appreciate the familiarity and simplicity of touch interfaces.

Many desk phones and conference phones now feature touchscreens, which is wonderful for users.

Poly, formerly Polycom and Plantronics, focus on making communications solutions for what workers want today.

The stylish Poly CCX Series of IP Phones includes models that are certified for Microsoft Teams, as well as open SIP phones for use with VoIP phone systems and services.

The CCX series features the legendary Poly sound quality with HD Voice, Acoustic Fence and Acoustic Clarity technology.

All the CCX phones have large, color touchscreen displays.

Here is how Poly recommends you clean and disinfect Poly CCX phones.

What should I use to clean Poly CCX phones?

Poly follows the recommendation by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) that you should use a mixture of 70% medicinal isopropyl alcohol and 30% water. We’re going to call this the “70:30 solution” for the rest of this blog.

Whatever you do, don’t use harsh chemicals like peroxide or bleach to clean your phones. Don’t even use multi-purpose cleaners. These harsher cleaners can damage the phone.

As a cloth, you should use a clean, dry, microfiber cloth.

(By the way, if you’re using this guide for a Poly/Polycom phone with buttons, they recommend you use a cotton swab to clean on and around the buttons.)

How should I clean a Poly CCX phone?

First off, turn off the CCX phone and unplug all cables or anything else plugged into it.

Spray the 70:30 solution onto the cloth. You don’t want the cloth to be sopping wet: just nicely damp.

Wipe the display of the CCX phone quickly, making sure that the solution doesn’t pool on the display.

Let it air dry. Because of the isopropyl alcohol, the solution will evaporate quite quickly.

After it’s completely dry, reattach all the cables or devices and turn the phone back on.

How often should I clean my Poly CCX phone?

Poly recommends that you clean your CCX phone regularly, but no more than 3 to 5 times per day. Cleaning it more often can damage the phone.

Are there additional steps for cleaning CCX phones in a healthcare or hospital environment?

Yes. First off, you should refer to your institution’s policies and protocols, which should supersede any advice we give.

However, Poly does have recommendations for cleaning Poly phones.

Clean the phone using the 70:30 solution via the process detailed above.

In addition, place the CCX phone under a UVGI (Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation) light for 1 to 2 minutes. UVGI lights are an additional method of killing microorganisms by disrupting their DNA.
