Grandstream Wave is a free app for iOS and Android that makes it simple to use a smartphone through your business’s internal VoIP phone system. It makes a smartphone into a fully functional SIP softphone.
Using Wave, you can configure your smartphone to support six SIP accounts, so you can have multiple points of entry for your business identities as long as you have a cellular connection. Wave supports 6-way audio conferencing and 24 virtual BLF keys. If your phone supports it, you can use a Bluetooth or corded headset. You can even get 2-way video conferencing from your phone! And Wave supports enterprise-class security, too, with options for running SIP using 256-bit SRTP encryption.
Here’s how to set up Grandstream Wave.
Setting Up Grandstream Wave
The first step is to download the free Grandstream Wave app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
After the app is installed, Grandstream Wave offers two simple ways to provision your smartphone. The process is the same for iOS and Android.
- Set up using a QR code
- Set up by entering information manually
Using a QR Code
If your business uses a Grandstream IP-PBX, like the popular Grandstream UCM6510, you can have the IP-PBX generate a QR code for automatic provisioning. Using your smartphone, you either scan the QR code or select it from your phone’s image library.
This process automatically provisions the smartphone for the appropriate SIP account.
Let’s go step by step using the UCM6510 as a model.
Generate a QR Code
When you set up an extension, you can associate an email address with it.
- Go to the IP-PBX’s web-based GUI
- Go to System Settings > Email Settings
- Select the appropriate extension
- Click on Email Notification
- Click OK
This will send the registration information to the associated email address, including a QR code.
(Note: If you’ve switched the IP-PBX’s local port from the default, 5060, you can’t use the QR code process.)
Scan the QR Code
Now that you have a QR code, open the Grandstream Wave app on your phone. Go to Settings > Account Settings.
There, you’ll see a number of options. Under Generic Accounts, you’ll find these options:
- UCM Account (Scan QR Code)
- UCM Account (Select QR Code Image)
- SIP Account
Android users will have an extra option for IPVideoTalk, which is a cloud conferencing platform from Grandstream.
Here’s how to provision your smartphone using a QR code:
- Select UCM Account (Scan QR Code) to make a camera screen pop up
- Scan the QR code that you made using the process above
- Note: you can scan the code from a computer screen
- Choose either to overwrite a pre-existing account or add a new account
If you select UCM Account (Select QR Code Image), the app will open up your smartphone’s image library. Select the image with the appropriate QR code.
Your smartphone is now a VoIP softphone.
You can add up to six SIP accounts to the same smartphone using this process.
Add SIP Account Manually
Adding an account manually is pretty much as simple.
- Under Generic Accounts, select SIP Account
- Fill in the extension’s account details and the SIP server address:
- Account Name
- SIP Server
- SIP User ID
- SIP Authentication ID
- VoiceMail UserID
- Display Name
- Tap the checkmark
There will be a green dot to indicate a successful configuration. A red dot indicates an unsuccessful one.
Using Other VoIP Providers
Grandstream makes broadly interoperable VoIP solutions. Grandstream Wave works just as well when you’re not using a Grandstream UCM IP-PBX.
When you go to Settings > Account Settings, you’ll see two sections: Generic Accounts and VoIP Providers.
Under VoIP Providers, you’ll see an extensive list of, well, VoIP providers. If you’re using one, select your provider from the list. Fill in the information, which will be similar to the manual SIP account process that we just covered.
